Chinese government starts registration of owners of computers and mobiles
In the ‘rebellious’ region of Xinjiang, buyers of a mobile phone or computer are required to register with the government. According to the Chinese government, the measure is intended to prevent “malicious information” and illegal activities.
The registration requirement applies to new computer equipment and mobile phones as well as second-hand equipment, The Guardian reports. Hardware sellers in Xinjiang Province are required to upload buyers’ information to a database maintained by the Chinese police. In addition, stores must also install security cameras.
In addition to mandatory registration, the Chinese government has also banned the sale of unregistered SIM cards, as well as the provision of public Wi-Fi spots. Retailers must also display a public warning that the distribution of hateful or terrorist content is strictly prohibited.
According to the Chinese government, the measures are necessary to reduce unrest in the region. It is unclear whether there are plans to introduce the measures in other provinces of China.
