Chinese government increases pressure on Google to continue censoring
The Chinese Minister of Industry and Information has threatened that Google’s failure to respect the law will not be without consequences. His statements show that a compromise between Google and China is still a long way off.
According to Minister Li Yizhong, responsible for the regulation of the internet in China, Google must comply with the laws “or accept the consequences”. “If you want to do something that goes against Chinese laws and regulations, you are unfriendly and irresponsible,” the minister said. Google previously threatened to leave China because the company no longer wanted to cooperate with the internet censorship that it is obliged to do by the government.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt said on Wednesday that his company has been negotiating with the Chinese government since the threat and that he expects results soon. In any case, Li Yizhong showed that he was not very sad about a possible departure: “If they leave, the Chinese internet market will continue to develop.”
In any case, China is far from easing its restrictions on internet use. “Obviously, if information threatens the stability of the people, we must block it,” spoke Yizhong.
