Chinese company to release 2.5″ smartphone with Android 7.0
Unihertz has raised money on Kickstarter to make the Jelly, a small smartphone with a 2.5″ screen that runs on Android 7.0. The device is due to ship in August. The small phone will cost $109 in stores.
There will be two versions of the smartphone. In addition to the Jelly with 1GB of ram and 8GB of storage, there will be the Jelly Pro, which has 2GB of ram and 16GB of storage. Both devices will have a 2.45″ screen with a resolution of 432×240 pixels. The soc is a quad-core at 1.1GHz, but it is not known which soc it is exactly.
Two nanosims fit in the device and there is also room for a micro-SD card. The removable battery has a capacity of 950mAh and the manufacturer claims that users can use the Jelly for up to three days. The standby time would be seven days. On the back is an eight-megapixel camera and the front camera has a resolution of two megapixels. The Jelly and Jelly Pro support most 4g networks, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.
An hour after the project appeared on Kickstarter, the required $30,000 had been raised. At the time of writing, more than $113,000 has been raised and the campaign still has a good month to go. Those who support the project will receive a copy of the Jelly for $79, if the project is successful. The Jelly Pro will cost $95 on Kickstarter.
Unihertz says the cheapest Jelly will cost $109 in stores. Converted and with VAT that is about 121 euros. The Jelly Pro should hit stores for $125. People who support the project should receive their device by August. It is not yet clear when the Jelly smartphones will be in stores.
The Chinese manufacturer started the design in April last year and produced the first prototypes at the beginning of this year. Test copies were created in March and sent to various media outlets, including Business Insider and YouTube channel Unbox Therapy.
