Chinese company acquires maker Clash of Clans
Chinese tech company Tencent Holdings Limited has acquired Finnish game developer Supercell. Tencent pays 8.6 billion dollars, converted 7.6 billion euros, for the maker of Clash of Clans.
Tencent acquires 84 percent of Supercell, valuing the company at $10.2 billion. It is the second major acquisition of a major game developer by Tencent. At the end of last year, the Chinese company already acquired the American Riot Games, the maker of League of Legends. Tencent also has a large stake in Activision Blizzard and Epic Games.
Supercell will continue to operate independently from its Helsinki headquarters, Tencent promises. The employees keep their shares in the company and can sell them annually to the new owner. Tencent acquires Supercell by acquiring the shares of the Japanese Softbank.
Tencent is one of the largest internet companies in the world, but focuses its services mainly on China. The company is behind the popular chat service WeChat, which has more than 700 million active users.
