China seems to be blocking Signal
China seems to be blocking the Signal chat app. The site and app no longer connect without VPN. The iOS app is still in the Chinese version of the App Store. The Chinese government has not yet confirmed the blockade.
The app does work normally in Hong Kong, Reuters said. In the rest of China, the app only works with a VPN. Users with iPhones can download the app from the App Store, but the app no longer works after installation. Signal wasn’t already on Chinese Android download stores. The Google Play Store is not available in China anyway.
The notifications come from users; the Chinese government has not confirmed the blockade and Signal has not said anything about it either. Last month, Signal presented a proxy system to bypass a blockade in Iran; it is unknown if that will also happen in China.
Signal has around 550,000 downloads on iOS in China, Techcrunch reports. The site does not have figures about installations on Android. Globally, Signal has a total of around 100 million downloads on both platforms to date.
