According to a study by Kassa, more than three out of four internet users do not achieve the speed associated with their subscription. According to the consumer program, the percentage of internet users who do not reach the maximum speed was highest among ADSL customers.

The results of the research have been put online by Kassa. In total, nearly 20,000 people were subjected to a speed test for their internet connection, with slightly more cable than ADSL customers participating. Three quarters of the people who took part in the test do not achieve the advertised speed with their subscription.

When the results are broken down by technology used, it appears that cable providers do slightly better than ADSL providers. On cable, 73 percent of internet users do not achieve the advertised speed, compared to 87 percent of ADSL users. Customers with cable internet achieve an average of 54 percent of the advertised speed, while that is 39 percent with ADSL. No results are known from fiber optic providers, because Kassa was unable to find enough testers.

The results of UPC have not been included at the cable providers. Kassa states that the provider was working to increase internet speeds during the investigation. As a result, it was not clear in all cases during testing whether the promised speed increase had already been implemented at the customer, so that the maximum speed could not be accurately determined.

According to Kassa, the results support calls for internet providers to advertise with a “from” speed or promised minimum speed. Earlier, telecom providers already started displaying average speeds next to the advertised maximum speeds.
