Cheap Qualcomm socs support dual cameras in smartphones
Qualcomm has presented three socs for cheap smartphones, all of which have dual camera support. The Snapdragon 653 also has support for a RAM of 8GB, twice as much as the predecessor Snapdragon 652.
The new socs are the Snapdragon 653, 626 and 427 variants. The Snapdragon 653 is similar to the 652, but in addition to support for 8GB of ram, it also has an X9 modem from Qualcomm on board, which enables upload speeds via 4G up to 150Mbit/s. That is 100Mbit/s with the Snapdragon 652. All three new socs have this X9 modem on board, which made its debut in the Snapdragon 625 earlier this year, Qualcomm reports.
The support for the dual cameras comes from the Spectra ‘dual-isp’ in the socs. These offer the possibility to process images from two cameras at the same time. Now that dual cameras in high-end smartphones are becoming more and more common, it is obvious that cheaper models will also receive this function in the coming years.
In addition, the three new socs have support for QuickCharge 3.0 and TruSignal. The latter is a set of optimizations to improve range in crowded areas. The Snapdragon 653 and 626 should appear in devices by the end of this year, the even cheaper Snapdragon 427 should first appear on spec sheets early next year.
