Certain HPE SAS SSDs fail after 32,768 hours

Hewlett Packard Enterprise warns that certain SAS SSDs the company uses in its servers will fail beyond repair after 32,768 hours of use. This is due to a bug in the firmware. HPE has made available firmware updates that prevent the issue.

HPE says it has been notified of the issue by an SSD vendor. The SSDs fail due to a firmware error. It occurs after exactly 32,768 hours of use, or 3 years, 270 days and 8 hours. HPE uses the affected SSDs in several products in its server and storage line.

The problems occur with SSDs that have a firmware version that is older than HPD8. If the error hits, the SSD will be damaged beyond repair. According to HPE, the data can no longer be recovered. In addition, according to HPE, there is a good chance that other SSDs installed at the same time as the affected SSD will also fail.

HPE has released firmware updates for eight SSDs. Another twelve affected SSDs will receive the firmware update in the week of December 9. HPE notes that the problem may not yet occur with SSDs that receive the update later, because they have not been on the market that long. HPE has posted instructions and firmware updates on its support page.

According to the manufacturer, products in the following series are affected: ProLiant, Synergy, Apollo, JBOD D3xxx, D6xxx, D8xxx, MSA, StoreVirtual 4345 and StoreVirtual 3200. 3PAR, Nimble, Simplivity, XP and Primera series products are not affected. the problem.
