CEO screen supplier Apple: iPhones get OLED screens
The CEO of Sharp, one of the suppliers of screens for Apple, says that the manufacturer is switching to OLED screens for subsequent versions of its iPhones. Rumors about this have been going on for a few years now.
The CEO did not say when Apple would switch to OLED screens, but did hint that Sharp could move the production of such screens to the United States. “If our main customer wants that, is it possible we won’t?” asks Tai Jeng-wu, Sharp’s CEO for two months, rhetorically.
The CEO made his statements during the presentation of an honorary doctorate at the university where he received his education. “We don’t know if Apple’s OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn’t walk this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It’s a crisis, but it’s also an opportunity,” he told the students. for his speech.
The iPhone would not be the first product with an OLED screen. Since the first generation, Apple has been using OLED screens for its Apple Watch and the Touch Bar on the new MacBook Pros is also an OLED screen. All variants of the iPhone currently have LCDs. OLED screens deliver a much higher contrast and are also thinner, which can result in a thinner housing or free up space in the current housing for new components or a larger battery. Samsung invariably uses OLED screens for its high-end smartphones, but Google, Huawei, OnePlus, HTC and LG also have models with such displays.
