CEO: Instagram is no longer a photo-sharing app

Instagram is no longer a photo sharing app, it now focuses more on video. That says CEO Adam Mosseri in a video to users. The social medium will therefore experiment in the coming months with serving more videos to users.

People open Instagram to be entertained, says Mosseri in the video to users. They now use the Feed or Stories less and communicate more through messages instead. That is why Instagram itself must become more of a place for entertainment via video, according to the CEO of the Facebook subsidiary.

In the coming months there will therefore be more experiments with video, including by showing videos full screen on telephones. There are also more posts in the Feed from accounts that users don’t follow, but are about topics that users might find interesting. Presumably this is to keep the Feed interesting now that regular users post less often in the Feed and in Stories.

Video is one of four areas Instagram wants to focus on. The others are DMs, shopping and makers. For the latter category, there will be more ways to earn money, for example via Stories that can only be seen by paying users.
