CentOS Project Leader Quits As Red Hat Takes A New Course

CentOS veteran and project leader Karanbir Singh resigns and leaves his position on the CentOS board. Singh will retire as Red Hat takes a new course with CentOS, with a focus on CentOS Stream.

Singh said on his departure that he hopes the CentOS Project with its new direction will provide lasting value for the people who remain involved. The board of the project thanks him for his many years of contribution and wishes him the best in his new challenges in the coming years. The board is calling for the nomination of a successor and will provide more details about the procedure for this shortly.

Karanbir Singh has been involved in CentOS Project for seventeen years. He started in November 2004 and has been part of the CentOS Admin team and the infrastructure team ever since. He was also responsible for the CentOS Build services and was project lead for the community version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux until his departure.

A year ago, Red Hat announced that CentOS Linux 8, the rebuild of RHEL 8, will stop at the end of 2021 and that the project will no longer revolve around rebuilding Red Hat Enterprise Linux after that. Instead, it will be a project around CentOS Stream, aka previews of RHEL. This change of direction sparked dissatisfaction among the developer community for the project and among users.
