CD Projekt RED, in collaboration with Polish game studio Fool’s Theory, announce an Unreal Engine 5 remake of The Witcher. The game is in an early stage of development and currently has no official release date.

Codenamed Canis Majoris, The Witcher is being rebuilt “from the ground up” for Unreal Engine 5. The game is being made by Fool’s Theory, a game studio that has previously mainly supported other developers, for example in the development of Divinity: Original Sin II and Outriders. CD Project RED retains in their own words ‘full creative supervision’ of the project. Veterans of the Polish company are also said to be working at Fool’s Theory, although it is not known whether the original developers of The Witcher are also involved in the remake.

The companies are not releasing anything about the remake of The Witcher yet. Patience is requested in both the tweet below and the linked blog post; it will “take a while” before more details are shared. CD Projekt RED is known for announcing projects well in advance, so it is expected that it will take a while before The Witcher Remake actually comes out.

The Witcher was released for PC in 2007 and was CD Projekt RED’s first game. Unlike all subsequent games from the Polish developer, the game still used a third-party engine, the Aurora Engine from BioWare. Later, the company developed its own REDengine, the foundation used in updated configurations for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, among others. For an all-new The Witcher game, CD Projekt also uses RED Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.

We’re thrilled to reveal that, together with @Fools_Theorywe’re working on remaking The Witcher using Unreal Engine 5 (codename: Canis Majoris)!

We want to do this right, so please be patient — it’s gonna be a while until we can share more details.
