Capcom stops fans developing Resident Evil and Code: Veronica remakes
A team of fans has been ordered by Capcom to stop developing remakes of Resident Evil and Resident Evil Code: Veronica. They received two cease and desist letters and had to stop the development of the projects.
According to Capcom, the projects had to be stopped due to ‘copyright aspects and licensing agreements’, reports Kotaku. The makers in question couples in a video that they are surprised by Capcom’s decision. “But we were using their ‘toys’ to make a free game that got a lot of attention. So it’s fine, we understand why we had to stop.”
While the remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica specifically consisted almost entirely of existing material from Capcom’s own remakes, there is speculation among fans that there may be other reasons for the projects to be halted. For example, the team behind the remakes is said to have received donations for the development of the projects, although in response to this it is said that this happens more often and does not necessarily have to be a problem. On the other hand, the projects would have received too much attention and therefore overshadow legitimate remakes from Capcom.
The makers say they will continue developing games; There is said to be a new project in development based on Resident Evil Code: Veronica ‘but without any copyright issues’.
