Canonical temporarily suspends Ubuntu 17.10 distribution after bios corruption reports
Canonical currently advises users not to install Ubuntu 17.10. The organization has discontinued the distribution because the run on certain Lenovo laptops can corrupt the bios and prevent settings from being saved.
Canonical is working on a fix and once it’s ready, the organization will put Ubuntu 17.10 back online. Canonical has posted a notice on Ubuntu’s download page that downloading the most recent version is ‘discouraged’, pointing to a page about the bug.
The bug affects many Lenovo models and some Acer laptops, according to the list on the bug page. The bug is due to incompatible Intel SPI drivers, Canonical says. By deactivating those drivers, it is possible to save settings in the bios again. Once the fix is in Ubuntu 17.10, Canonical will put the download back online.
