Canonical is making its real-time version of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS generally available. That OS has a real-time variant of the Linux kernel. Real-time Ubuntu is mainly intended for industrial applications and companies, but will also be available for free.

Canonical will make real-time Ubuntu available on Tuesday as a Server and Core variant, the company writes in a press release. The former will be available through Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro subscription. This real-time version of Ubuntu Server, as the name suggests, is intended for use in servers. In turn, Ubuntu Core is primarily optimized for edge devices and IoT applications. The Core version with real-time kernel will be available to enterprise customers with its own app store. Real-time Ubuntu will also be available for free for personal use through Ubuntu Advantage, Canonical reported earlier.

The real-time version of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS features version 5.15 of the Linux kernel containing the Preempt_rt patch set integrated, so that the kernel works more preemptive. A real-time kernel also reacts deterministically to external events and can therefore complete tasks within a certain, predictable time, unlike a ‘normal’ kernel where response times can be more arbitrary. Kernel response times in the real-time version of Ubuntu should also be low in general, Canonical claims.

According to Canonical, real-time Ubuntu is primarily intended for industrial applications, which benefit from a real-time kernel with low and predictable latencies. For example, the company says the OS can be used in the systems of telecom providers, automotive, aerospace and defense, in addition to the public sector, healthcare and retail. The OS will be available for x86 and 64bit Arm architectures.
