Canonical closes Ubuntu One cloud storage service
Canonical is closing its cloud storage service Ubuntu One. While the service has enjoyed considerable popularity, the company is no longer using it due to fierce competition from other online storage services. “When we offer a service, we want to compete globally,” Canonical states.
The Ubuntu developer will immediately stop offering the paid cloud storage packages, according to the Canonicalblog. The service will continue to work until June 1 this year and data that users have on the cloud storage service can be downloaded until July 31. After that, everything will be deleted.
Ubuntu One users who prepaid for the service will get their money back. Canonical will count from the date of this announcement and not from the day the service will be discontinued.
In the 14.04 LTS release of Ubuntu, the client application for the One cloud service will no longer be included. The One apps from the Ubuntu, Google and Apple app stores will also be unavailable soon. The company does promise to make the source code of the One system public to allow others to set up their own cloud services based on Canonical’s work. The closure of the One service will not affect the Ubuntu One single sign on service, the Ubuntu One payment service or the backend U1DB database service.
