Canon announces the development of the EOS-R5, a mirrorless camera that can shoot stills at 20 frames per second and capture video in 8k resolution at an as-yet-unknown frame rate. The device will have a stabilized sensor.

Canon does not yet provide many details about the new device, so the resolution of the sensor is unknown. To film in 8k resolution, however, a sensor with at least 7680×4320 pixels is needed. EOS-R series cameras have a 3:2 ratio sensor, so a sensor with at least 7680×5120 pixels is likely. This would give the camera a resolution of 40 megapixels or higher.

According to Canon, the device will have a newly designed cmos sensor and it will have an image stabilization mechanism. Current EOS R cameras don’t have that yet. The camera can take pictures at 20 frames per second in a silent shutter mode, using an electronic shutter. With the mechanical shutter, the maximum shooting speed is 12 fps. The device has two memory card slots.

Canon also says it is working on seven RF lenses that will be released this year. This includes the RF 100-500 mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM telephoto zoom. There will also be two RF Extenders, with magnification of 1.4x and 2x. It is not yet known when the EOS-R5 will be released and what the camera will cost. Canon shows a first prototype at a trade show in Las Vegas at the end of February.
