Canon shows small ‘outdoor camera’ on crowdfunding site

Camera maker Canon has launched a crowdfunding page for a product called Ivy Rec. It is a small ‘outdoor camera’ that users can connect to a smartphone to take images.

The Ivy Rec is about the size of a USB stick and uses a 1/3″ sensor with a maximum resolution of thirteen megapixels. This seems to be a sensor that could also be in a smartphone, although most have smartphones now have camera sensors larger than 1/3″. The Ivy Rec can record video in 1080p at 60fps, the page states.

The camera seems to be a cheap point-and-shoot, thinks DPReview. Canon has omitted functions such as a screen, among other things. Instead, the camera connects wirelessly to a smartphone, on which a Canon app can run to display a viewfinder. Users can also look through the hole to get an idea of what they are making images of.

At the back there is also a rotary wheel to set the mode, but other ways of operation do not seem to be there. The housing is waterproof and can be attached to other objects by means of a clip. The page does not mention when the crowdfunding will go live, when the camera will be on sale and how much it will cost.
