Canon presents SX70 HS compact camera with 65x zoom and 4k movie function

Canon has announced the PowerShot SX70 HS. The successor to the SX60 HS retains the 65x optical zoom lens; new is the 4k movie function and the possibility to shoot photos in cr3 raw format.

Canon also gives the PowerShot SX70 HS an electronic viewfinder that uses an OLED screen with 2.36 million pixels. With the predecessor, that was an LCD with 922,000 pixels. On the housing is an eye sensor so that the screen in the viewfinder can be switched on and off automatically, depending on whether the user puts his eye against the camera or removes it.

The SX70 HS has a 20.3 megapixel sensor; it’s a tiny 1/2.3″ bsi-cmos chip. Canon gives the camera its Digic 8 image processor and the shooting speed comes out at up to 10 frames per second with the single point autofocus, or 5.7fps with continuous The 4k movie function uses the h264 codec with a bit rate of 120Mbit/s and can film at 30fps or at 25fps.The frame rate in 1080p goes up to 60fps.Like its predecessor, the SX70 also has an input for a external microphone.

The 65x zoom lens is unchanged. It has a 35mm focal length equivalent of 21-1365mm with an aperture of f/3.4-6.5. Canon does claim that the new image processor provides better image stabilization, which should now be effective up to five stops. Furthermore, the device now shoots photos in the cr3-raw format, which yields smaller files than cr2.

Canon will be selling the PowerShot SX70 HS from November for a suggested retail price of 560 euros.
