Canon introduces video camera that shoots color images in near-darkness
Canon has announced the ME20F-SH, a camera that can shoot color images in low-light conditions. According to Canon, that works up to 0.0005 lux, allowing the camera to shoot video images with an equivalent of 4 million ISO.
The manufacturer announced the arrival of the camera on Thursday, several media reported, including DP review. The ME20F-SH has a cubic body and can be paired with lenses via the EF and EF-S mount. Most striking, however, is the camera’s sensitivity to light. A 2.26 megapixel CMOS sensor with a pixel size of 19 µm has been chosen as the basis: that is about 5.5 times larger than a high-end SLR camera. The images shot are in 1080p and with a maximum frame rate of 60 frames per second.
With the large pixels, the video camera is particularly light sensitive. According to Canon, video images can be shot in situations where it is almost completely dark. The specifications indicate that the limit is 0.0005 lux. Converted, the camera then shoots images with an ISO light sensitivity of 4 million. Furthermore, the ME20F-SH has output via HDMI and microphones can be connected via a 2.5mm or 3.5mm jack. There is also an RS-422 port for connecting accessories.
Canon will start selling its light-sensitive video camera from December. Those who are interested should dig deep into their pockets: the suggested retail price is USD 30,000, converted approximately EUR 27,530.
