Canon introduces its first mirrorless camera with a built-in viewfinder. The EOS M5 is equipped with a 24.2-megapixel sensor with Dual Pixel AF technology. Canon also comes with an 18-150mm zoom lens for the EF-M system.

The EOS M5’s electronic viewfinder has 2.36 million pixels. It is the first camera in the M-series to have a built-in viewfinder, although such a viewfinder was already available as an optional accessory with the EOS M3.

Canon equips the EOS M5 with a 24.2-megapixel sensor in the aps-c format, with a sensitivity of 100 to 25,600 iso. The sensor has Dual Pixel AF technology, just like the SLR cameras such as the 80D. Thanks to the technology, the autofocus of the EOS M5 is probably faster and more accurate than with previous system cameras from Canon.

The device shoots at a maximum of 9fps, but then the focus is fixed at the focus distance at which the first photo was taken. With continuous autofocus, the speed is 7fps. A new Digic 7 processor takes care of the processing of the images. Also new is digital stabilization during filming, Canon speaks of five-axis stabilization, but that is a combination of optical stabilization in the lens and digital stabilization on the sensor. The camera films in 1080p resolution with a maximum of 60fps.

Canon provides the EOS M5 with WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth. The 3″ tilting screen is a touchscreen and has 1.62 million pixels. The device has dimensions of 116x89x61mm and weighs 427 grams. A week before the introduction, most data about the camera already appeared online.

Along with the camera, Canon introduces a new zoom lens for the EF-M system: the 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. The lens with 8.3x optical zoom is 87mm long, has a 55mm filter thread and weighs 300 grams. Seventeen lens elements in thirteen groups have been incorporated into the optical design. The lens is equipped with IS image stabilization and has an STM stepper motor.

Canon is also releasing a new version of its 70-300mm lens for DSLRs, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM. An LCD is placed on the housing, on which information about the focal point used and the focus distance can be displayed. The zoom has an optical construction of seventeen lens elements in twelve groups, is 146 mm long and has a weight of 710 grams. The telephoto zoom can be equipped with 67mm filters.

Canon will put the EOS M5 body in the shops from November for a suggested retail price of 1150 euros. The 18-150mm lens will be released that same month and costs 510 euros. The new EF 70-300mm zoom lens will be launched in December for a suggested retail price of 590 euros.
