Canon has introduced the EOS-1D X Mark III SLR. Like its predecessor, this high-end camera excels in speed and is therefore aimed at sports and nature photographers. The camera has a slightly modified sensor, fast chips and a higher shooting speed.

The Canon EOS-1D Mark III has a new sensor with a resolution of 20.2 megapixels of the full-frame format. In terms of resolution, that is completely comparable to the predecessor, but according to Canon, the new sensor is equipped with a new low-pass filter that should provide more detail in the captured images. Added to this is the addition of the new Digix X processor. According to the manufacturer, this chip leads to a three times faster image processing speed compared to the EOS-1D Mark II and the processing of the Dual Pixel autofocus by this chip is 380 times faster. These are either phase-detection pixels on the sensor that horizontally cover 90 percent of the surface and the full height. In addition, there is a Digic 8 processor that is specifically intended for autofocus and measuring exposure via the viewfinder.

The new camera has an increased shooting speed. Where the predecessor achieved a speed of 14 fps using the mirror and the optical viewfinder, this has been increased to 16 fps with the EOS-1D X Mark III. In live mode, where the mirror is flipped up and the screen on the back is used, the new camera reaches a speed of 20fps; that was 16fps with the EOS-1D X Mark II. New is the option to save photos in heif format, which is a file format with 10bit display and compression.

Canon says the new camera’s autofocus system has head and face tracking and has been trained through deep learning. A total of 191 focus points are available, of which 155 are cross-sensitive. The buffer is almost infinite with 1000 photos, although that can be increased by using CF Express cards for the two available slots, both of which support this memory type.

In terms of video, some improvements have also been made. The camera can record raw videos in 12bit with a resolution of 5.5k and 60 frames per second, reaching a bit rate of 2600Mbit/s. A crop is applied here; without crop, 4k at 60fps in 10bit with 4:2:2 sampling is possible. Canon’s C-Log profile is also built in, the device has an Ethernet connection and can be equipped with an optional WiFi module. There are connections for a 3.5mm microphone, headphones and a mini HDMI connection.

The camera will be available from February for a suggested retail price of 7420 euros. The 1D X Mark II from 2016 cost 6400 euros at release and is currently in the Pricewatch for 5,500 euros.
