Canon has announced two new mirrorless cameras. The EOS R5 and R6 both feature a new full-frame sensor. The top model has an 8k movie function and can film in 4k at 120fps. The R5 will be released at the end of July, the cheaper R6 will follow in August.

The Canon EOS R5 is the high-end model. This camera features a newly designed full-frame sensor with a resolution of 45 megapixels. The camera can take photos continuously at a rate of up to 20 frames per second with an electronic shutter, or 12bps with the mechanical shutter. The mirrorless Canon camera also has image stabilization in the body for the first time. According to the manufacturer, this is good for eight stops, provided that certain Canon RF lenses are used. The EOS R5 features Dual Pixel AF II with 1053 zones on the sensor. This autofocus function is available for both photo and video and works at all possible resolutions.

The EOS R5 can continuously record 8k videos at 29.97fps for twenty minutes. This can be done in 12-bit raw format. The bitrate is 2600Mbit / s, with which a 256GB card can be full in about 13 minutes, for example. The bitrate can be halved by recording in 10bits 4: 2: 2. The camera can also record 4k videos internally at 120fps. The images can be recorded in 12bits raw, or with 10bits 4: 2: 2 C-Log or HDR PQ. This uses h265 compression.

The camera supports 17: 9 and 16: 9 aspect ratios when recording videos. Canon states that the full width of the sensor is used when users record 8k videos. In addition, users can extract 35.4 megapixel photos from the 8k videos.

The R5 has two card slots, namely a cf express slot and an sd slot. The camera has a fold-out 3.2 “LCD with a resolution of 2.1 million pixels. The camera is also equipped with a new Digic X processor, which is probably comparable to the Digic X that Canon also has in the more expensive EOS. -1DX Mark III The electronic viewfinder has a resolution of 5.76 million pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz This viewfinder has a magnification of 0.76x The native ISO range of the sensor ranges from 100 to 51,200. digitally expandable to 102,400.

Furthermore, the EOS R5 has an LCD on the top. The device also has a 3.5mm jack for a microphone, a separate audio connector for headphones, a micro HDMI output and a USB 3.1 gen 2 connection. The R5 uses a new LP-EP6NH battery with a ‘higher capacity’. It should last up to 80 minutes when recording 8k raw videos. The current LP-E6N batteries also work in the R5. The whole weighs 735 grams, excluding the lens. The camera gets a suggested retail price of 4,550 euros for the body only. The camera will be available from the end of July.

Canon also announces the EOS R6 . This is a slightly cheaper model, although this camera also has a full-frame sensor. The resolution is lower with 20 megapixels. However, the image stabilization in the body remains the same. Support for Dual Pixel AF II also remains. The frame rate when taking photos also remains the same, just like the Digic X processor used.

The EOS R6 can record up to 4k videos at 60fps, or full HD at 120fps. The camera can do this in 10-bit 4: 2: 2 in C-Log or HDR PQ. Support for raw video is missing. The bitrate of 4k video at 60fps is 340Mbit / s. The camera does add a crop. The R6 uses 93 percent of the sensor when recording 4k images. The R6 also has an ISO range of 100 to 102,400. This can be expanded to 204,800.

The electronic viewfinder also has a lower resolution of 3.68 million pixels. The fold-out LCD also has a lower resolution, with 1.62 million pixels. In addition, the R6 has two SD slots. The camera weighs slightly less at 680 grams than the R5. The Canon EOS R6 will appear at the end of August for a suggested retail price of 2,740 euros. A set with RF 24-105 IS STM lens costs 3100 euros.

Along with the cameras, Canon also comes with four new RF lenses, including an 85mm f / 2 lens. According to Canon, this lens is intended for portrait photography and provides five stops of image stabilization in combination with an R5 or R6. This RF 85mm f / 2 720 euros and will be released in October.

Furthermore, the RF 100-500 mm F / 4.5-7.1L IS USM telephoto zoom appears, for 3150 euros. This lens is good for six stops of image stabilization on the EOS R5 and R6 and will be released in October. Canon also presents the RF 600mm f / 11 and RF 800mm f / 11 IS STM, which are relatively light telephoto lenses of 930 and 1260 grams respectively. They come out in July for 820 and 1070 euros.

The Extender RF 1.4x and RF 2x are products that increase the crop factor of cameras. According to Canon, these are for example intended for press, nature or sports photographers who want to take photos from a great distance. These RF 1.4x and RF 2x cost 610 and 770 euros respectively and will be available at the end of July.
