Canon has released a new lens exclusively for use with its EOS M mirrorless camera. The 55-200mm telephoto lens brings the total number of lenses for the EOS-M to four and the model should hit the shelves in June.

Current EOS M owners will probably find the new lens a welcome addition, as until now, in addition to the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, there was a 22mm f2.0 prime and an 11-22mm f/4. 5.6 wide angle not an option to use a telephoto lens. Until now, this was only possible by using the EF-M adapter, in combination with a regular EOS lens.

The Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM uses an STM stepper motor and is equipped with an Image Stabilizer that allows up to 3.5 stops slower handheld shutter speeds. The lens is equipped with a UD lens element that should guarantee good image quality over the entire zoom range. The front lens element does not rotate while zooming, allowing for hassle-free use of filters. Manual focusing – full-time manual focus – is also possible during autofocus. The lens will be in stores later this month for a suggested retail price of 309 euros.

With the addition of this 55-200mm telephoto lens, Canon now offers a range of 11-200mm with four lenses. The EOS M line is thus slowly maturing, although Canon is still lagging behind compared to competing system cameras for which a significantly larger range of lenses is available. The range of system cameras from Canon is also limited. In Europe, the EOS M is the only model, while in Asia the EOS M2 has been released.
