Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will include a Battle Pass system. Allows users to unlock in-game content by completing missions. The Battle Pass will have a free and a paid variant.

In a blog post, Activision says that the Battle Pass will only be added to the game after release, so that players can “unlock content in the base game first.” The company reports that all content that impacts game balance can be unlocked for free by playing the game. This includes, for example, weapons and attachments. The game will also not contain any surprise mechanics such as loot boxes, but the developer already announced this earlier. Modern Warfare does receive microtransactions in the form of cosmetic items in an in-game store, by the way.

Activision previously announced that the game will not receive a Season Pass or paid map packs. Instead, developer Infinity Ward will add free multiplayer maps to the game upon release. Modern Warfare will also be cross-platform, allowing PlayStation and Xbox users, for example, to play together in one lobby.

More and more games are using a Battle Pass. Fortnite, for example, has a very similar system, with free and paid content. PUBG has a similar Event Pass, but users have to pay for it anyway. So there is no free version. The mobile version of PUBG does have a free Battle Pass.
