Business newspaper: Google has delivered 2.1 million Pixel smartphones
Google has shipped 2.1 million units of its smartphones in the five months since the Pixel and Pixel XL were released. That is the claim of Taiwan’s largest business newspaper, home of HTC, which manufactures the phone for Google.
It’s unknown how the Pixel will stack up against Nexus phones from previous years, but with 2.1 million Pixels shipped, Google is a small player in the smartphone market. For example, Apple shipped more than 78 million iPhones in the three months to the end of December. Samsung has not announced deliveries for years and Huawei, the world number three, delivered twelve million copies of its high-end phone series P9 from last year. Google does not sell the Pixel worldwide, but in a limited number of countries.
HTC will also be manufacturing the Pixels this year, Commercial Times reports. Several companies are in the running for 2018. In addition to HTC, LG, the Chinese Coolpad and the Chinese TCL would also like to produce the devices. TCL already makes phones under the Alcatel brand and is also a licensee of BlackBerry. For example, the KeyOne comes from the TCL factories.
Google released the Pixel and Pixel XL last fall. The search giant previously hinted that there will probably be a sequel to the phones this fall.
