British newspaper The Guardian may be hit by ransomware attack
The Guardian reports that an IT incident has occurred. The British newspaper suspects that it is a ransomware attack. The network is down and some of the internal systems have been affected by the incident.
The incident occurred according to The Guardian for the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Newspaper employees have to work from home. The newspaper expects that Thursday’s paper newspaper can be printed as usual.
According to the director of The Guardian Media Group, Anna Bateson, it is not yet entirely certain that this is a ransomware attack: “An IT incident has occurred that is affecting our IT network and systems. We believe it is a ransomware attack, but keep other options open.”
The newspaper was able to provide news on its site on Wednesday. The system for publishing articles is not affected. The newspaper’s employees have been asked to work from home for the rest of the week. A note distributed to staff and seen by the Financial Times, calls on employees not to use the VPN. Employees who work from the editorial office cannot use the WiFi.
The Guardian is one of the most read newspapers from the United Kingdom, which is also widely read internationally.
