Brazil’s top judge lifts Telegram ban

Brazil’s top court has lifted the Telegram ban. The chat app met the judge’s requirements for blocking disinformation. The company behind the app says it missed the court’s emails.

Telegram has never been unavailable in Brazil, as carriers had five days to comply with the ban, says The New York Times. Telegram promises to actively monitor the 100 most popular channels in Brazil in the run-up to the presidential elections in October. The app will also promote verified information and flag incorrect posts as such.

Telegram said it had not seen the emails before. The chat app suggested using a specially configured email address for takedown requests, but the judicial system continued to email to the common Telegram address. Telegram allegedly overlooked the emails in that inbox and, therefore, did not respond to the requests.
