Both Nextcloud and ownCloud add two-factor authentication
Both ownCloud and Nextcloud have released a new release and both open source cloud storage projects are adding two-factor authentication to their releases. In addition to the extra security, both projects have set different priorities.
In the beta number 10 of Nextcloud, the fork of ownCloud that saw the light of day in early June, the developers chose to introduce additional security against brute-force attacks. This is achieved by slowing down or blocking logins from specific subnets by default. With an ipv4 address, authorization attempts after multiple wrong login attempts are delayed by up to 30 seconds and with traffic from an ipv6 address the specific device of the attacker can be blocked.
It has also become easier with Nextcloud to share links from files. This means that the Files app provides permanent links to files in the url bar between Nextcloud users. If a file is moved within the Nextcloud environment, the link remains the same. The use of other storage services has also been improved, such as Google Drive and Dropbox using less memory.
OwnCloud allows users to add certain triggers to files in the Enterprise edition. For example, documents can be converted to PDF or sent to specific recipients by email. Also, ownCloud has made a major change in how it handles smb shares. Until this new version with version number 9.1, smb shares still had to be periodically scanned for changes, which could lead to problems with large installations with more than 100,000 files. New changes only became visible after the complete scan. Version 9.1 can directly implement these changes via notifications from Windows network drives, which would save a lot of time.
Nextcloud is a fork of ownCloud that was put together by ownCloud founder Frank Karlitschek and some other developers from the very beginning of ownCloud. A month and a half after leaving ownCloud, Karlitschek came up with Nextcloud. In doing so, he mainly wanted to remove doubts in the area of transparency.
