Borderlands developer working on 1vs1 shooter

Developer Gearbox has put a website for Project 1v1 online. Under that code name, the studio is working on a new first-person shooter, in which two players have to compete against each other. The studio plans to conduct a test in the summer.

Gearbox doesn’t give many details yet. The website states that it is a competitive fps, which combines the fast-paced action of a shooter with the strategy of card collecting games. Furthermore, the developer reports that a short closed ‘technical test’ will take place this summer. Interested parties can register for this.

Three game modes will be playable during the test: Ranked, Challenge and Arena. In the first, players are matched according to their past performance. By winning matches, players earn experience and crates containing cards. Challenge mode does not count towards the ranking and in Arena mode, players must defeat the Arena champion to take his place.

The test serves to put the infrastructure to the test, but Gearbox also wants to find out what gamers think about the new game. The results of that test will influence the further development of the game. It is not yet clear when the game should actually be released.
