Borderlands 3 will get crossplay support for PlayStation players this spring
PlayStation players will be able to enjoy crossplay in Borderlands 3 before this spring. The game will soon support crossplay across all platforms. An exact date for the support is not yet known.
gear box reports that full crossplay support will be available “later this spring.” That means crossplay in Borderlands 3 will soon be available between players on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Google Stadia. Until now, all platforms supported crossplay in Borderlands 3, except PlayStation. Last month it was announced that the PlayStation versions of the 2019 first-person shooter will still support crossplay.
A possible explanation for why crossplay will still be available to PlayStation players two years after the game’s release is that Sony is somewhat hesitant when it comes to crossplay support. Previous arguments Sony cited for this include not wanting to participate because of a “commercial discussion”, exposing children “to outside influences that we cannot manage or control” and wanting to provide “the best experience” on the PlayStation consoles. .
Lately that seems to be changing. This may be because Sony sometimes asks developers for a fee if they want to add crossplay to their games. The amount would be based on the popularity of the PlayStation version of the game and the amount of revenue Sony derives from the PlayStation Network.
The Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which came out on March 25, also supports crossplay across all platforms. Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford previously said on Twitter that crossplay for PlayStation users for Borderlands 3 is ‘inevitable’. An exact date has not yet been announced, but crossplay support is expected to arrive in the first half of this year.
