Borderlands 3 players can share save files between Steam and Epic Games Store
Borderlands 3 players can take save files containing progression with them when they switch from the Epic Games Store to the Steam platform, for example. Crossplay will also be available between both PC platforms.
Developer Gearbox writes that starting March 13, the date Borderlands will be released on Steam, players will be able to play alongside other PC players, regardless of whether the game was purchased through the Epic Games Store or through Steam. When players first launch Borderlands 3 on Steam, there will be a special screen with the option to turn crossplay on or off. The same applies to players who play the game via the Epic Games Store, although the crossplay option requires them to download a new patch first.
The crossplay function can also be found in the main menu of the game. This feature allows players to invite others playing the game through the competitive game store to game sessions. Crossplay with the consoles is not yet possible. Gearbox did indicate last year that it is the intention that crossplay with the consoles and Stadia will also be possible, but it is unclear when that will be the case.
In addition, there is the option of transferring the data about the progression between the two platforms. However, this has to be done manually. According to Gearbox, this poses a risk that the save files may be lost; the developer therefore advises players to back up those files first. It is not yet possible to exchange items between the Steam and the Epic Games Store versions of Borderlands 3. Gearbox says that it will make this possible via a new patch in the near future, although it is unknown when it will be released.
About half a year ago, Borderlands 3 was already released on the Epic Games Store on the PC and on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is also available to Google Stadia players. Borderlands 3 will be out on Steam on March 13 and will be available to preload on March 10. Guns, Love and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock DLC will be released on March 26, a paid expansion that is part of the season pass, but will also be available for purchase separately.
