The Bluetooth SIG will present the Bluetooth 3.0 specification on April 21, the organization has confirmed to Phone Scoop. Above all, the new standard should speed up the transfer of files between two Bluetooth devices.

In the bluetooth 3.0 specification, which according to Phone Scoop is officially released on April 21, a mode for the fast transfer of files between two Bluetooth 3.0 devices is included. This ‘Bluetooth 3.0 + High Speed’ standard uses Bluetooth technology for the handshake, then switches to 802.11 technology, as used in Wi-Fi, for the fast transfer of large files. Incidentally, this does not require a WiFi network. In this mode, speeds of 480Mbps can probably be achieved over short distances, but the final specification will clarify this. After the file transfer has been completed, it switches back to the more energy-efficient Bluetooth technology, with the maximum transfer rate being 3Mbps.

In addition to using an 802.11 protocol to speed up file transfers, the new specification also mandates the use of so-called Enhanced Power Control technology. By varying the power of the transmitter, the loss of connections, for example when a mobile phone is put in a pocket, must be prevented.
