Bloomberg: Sony is making more PlayStation 4 consoles than planned due to PS5 shortages
Due to the worldwide PlayStation 5 shortages due to chip shortages, Sony would produce more PlayStation 4 consoles than planned. It is reported that Sony initially wanted to stop production at the end of 2021, but PS4s are still being made throughout 2022.
About a million more PlayStation 4 consoles will be made this year, Bloomberg writes, based on conversations with anonymous sources within Sony. Because the chips of that system are less advanced, the consoles are easier to make. By ramping up production of the cheaper PS4, Sony could negotiate a better deal with manufacturing partners as the company would need more parts. The company would also like to fill the ‘supply vacuum’ with this move and hopes to keep gamers within the PlayStation ecosystem.
Sony denied to Bloomberg that it planned to stop production of the PlayStation 4 last year. “It’s one of our best-selling consoles and there’s always overlap between generations,” the manufacturer said. Sony does confirm that PS4 systems will be produced throughout the year.
