Apple is working with optical system manufacturer Carl Zeiss on a Google Glass variant for the iPhone. That reports blogger Robert Scoble. The glasses may already be released this year, according to an employee of the German company.

The glasses will get Carl Zeiss lenses, but Scoble doesn’t say anything about it in his Facebook post. It is not the first time that Apple augmented reality glasses have been mentioned in the rumor circuit. A rumor about this came out in November, while director Tim Cook previously said he saw more in augmented reality than in VR. It already took over a company that specialized in augmented reality in 2015.

An earlier rumor spoke of a release next year, but the Zeiss employee said the glasses should be released this year, according to Scoble. It is unknown what the glasses look like and what functions they should have. Unlike Google Glass, Apple designs its augmented reality application in secret.

In any case, the glasses will be able to show the user information from a connected iPhone in an image over the real reality. Google has stopped developing Glass, but work on augmented reality continues. For example, Microsoft has shown Hololens and the company Magic Leap is also developing glasses thanks to large investments.
