Blizzard wants to make Diablo II run smoother on new operating systems
Diablo II has received a new update from Blizzard, sixteen years after the game was released. Patch 1.14a should fix a number of glitches that players could experience when running a recent operating system.
Blizzard hinted in the announcement that more updates to Diablo II are coming. Patch 1.14a focuses on addressing the issues that Diablo II can exhibit with current operating systems. In addition, the update brings a new installer for OS X. “You can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs,” Blizzard said.
The studio is also working on improving cheat and hack detection in the game. “This journey starts with running Diablo II on modern platforms but doesn’t end there,” Blizzard said. Diablo II was released in 2000 and the last update, 1.13d, appeared in 2011. In 2012, Blizzard released its successor, Diablo III.
Last November, a job posting appeared on Blizzard’s website, in which the developer was looking for a programmer to ‘restore’ old games. Given that an update for Diablo II has now appeared, Blizzard seems to have found the desired candidate. In the ad, the studio also hinted at updates to other classics such as StarCraft and Warcraft III.
