Blizzard to make major changes to StarCraft II multiplayer

Blizzard plans to make major changes to StarCraft II’s multiplayer. A number of units will have new possibilities. The most drastic change is the intention to remove the Protoss unit Mothership Core in its entirety.

Removing the Mothership Core is experimental and risky, according to Blizzard. This change will therefore be extensively tested. The company says it will closely monitor how this changes the game during the test phase.

By deleting the Mothership Core, Blizzard hopes to make defending a Protoss base easier during the start of a match. The defensive task is taken over by the Nexus itself, the building that is the heart of every Protoss base. The current Mothership Core is a moving defensive unit and removing it will drastically change the gameplay. There is no longer a need to build a separate unit to defend the base. To compensate, the developer wants to adjust the Stalker, among other things; this unit gets a lower attack rate, but will deal more damage per shot.

Furthermore, Blizzard will be making numerous balance adjustments and changes to units from the three factions in the game: the Terran, Protoss and Zerg. An extensive description of all changes has been published in a blog. Blizzard’s goal is to use the changes to make some units that are rarely used more useful and to improve the multiplayer of StarCraft II as a whole. The game’s economy will also be adjusted slightly, in the hope that players who are behind in a match will have a better chance of coming back. The changes are already active on the StarCraft II Multiplayer test server. Blizzard plans to make the final changes after testing when the tournament season ends in November.
