Blizzard tests chat moderation software on Twitch streams Overwatch Contenders

Blizzard will test new chat moderation software on the Twitch channel of the Overwatch League’s semi-professional esports division. As a result, spectators must link their Battle.net account to their Twitch account in order to participate in the chat.

Blizzard reports that the test will be conducted for the first time during the quarterfinals of the third season of Overwatch Contenders. These last from December 28 to January 12. Afterwards, the Path to Pro team, which includes the esports division, evaluates the effectiveness of the software.

The publisher says it wants to “test a new way to improve the Path to Pro ecosystem” and that it “wants to create a positive viewing experience.” Spectators attempting to join the chat without the account integration will receive an automatic message requesting them to link the Twitch and Battle.net accounts together.

Variety claims that the moderation software can serve as a measure to prevent spam and the posting of abusive slogans in Twitch chat. In addition, Blizzard has begun a tougher approach to offending e-athletes. Last week, the publisher released a public list of Overwatch League players with multiple offenses to their credit. The affected players do not have a contract with Blizzard, but could be fined or banned from tournaments.
