Blizzard raises $330,000 in WoW server blade auction
Blizzard is donating $330,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. The studio raised the money from the auction of 2000 server blades, which were used shortly after the introduction of World of Warcraft.
In October, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it was going to auction 2,000 HP BladeSystem server blades. The blades were used in 2005, in the early days of World of Warcraft, to host the successful mmog. Blizzard could accommodate 500 European and North American WoW servers on the 2000 blades. The auction has now ended and Blizzard known that it raised $330,000. The money will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, which conducts research into childhood cancer and other deadly childhood diseases.
Blizzard supplied the servers in a special housing, with a transparent front with the World of Warcraft logo on it. Buyers also received a plaque with signatures from members of the WoW development team. By the way, Blizzard no longer has enough server blades to host the game with 2000 server blades. In 2009, the studio announced that 13,500 blades were needed to keep the game running.
