Blizzard says it has researched the possibilities for classic World of Warcraft servers, but has come to the conclusion that this is difficult to implement. However, the company is considering a stripped-down ‘pristine realm’. Blizzard recently took the Nostalrius servers offline.

Blizzard has posted an extensive response to the downing of those popular servers that fans managed to keep the original version of World of Warcraft playable. According to Blizzard, “classic servers” have been a recurring topic for years, which is also very much alive among the studio’s employees.

“Then why not leave Nostalrius alone? The honest answer is that failure to protect intellectual property damages Blizzard’s rights,” the company writes. To bring back the nostalgia of the first World of Warcraft, the company is thinking of a ‘pristine realm’. This seems to be a recent version of WoW where a lot of functionality, such as transfers and boosts, is disabled.

In addition, Blizzard says it is in talks with the administrators of Nostalrius. The downing of the servers sparked a lot of outrage. A petition to preserve legacy servers has been signed more than 235,000 times.
