Blizzard has announced that its World of Warcraft expansion Battle for Azeroth had sold 3.4 million copies by the end of its first day. According to the company, that is a record for its long-running mmorpg.

The expansion was released on August 14, and according to Blizzard, the number is 3.4 million worldwide sales. It remains to be seen whether this number translates, for example, into an increase in the number of active players. The company announced in the presentation of its quarterly figures at the beginning of this month that it is dealing with a declining number of monthly active players. For example, there were 37 million monthly active players in the second quarter compared to 46 million in the same quarter in 2017. Blizzard did not disclose figures per game.

Battle for Azeroth is the seventh expansion for World of Warcraft and brings a number of innovations with it. This way players can progress to level 120 and they can move into two new continents: Zandalar and Kul Tiras. In addition, a number of new races will be added, as will the Island Expedition and Warfront modes. According to Blizzard’s current announcement, players should be able to play that latter mode “in the coming weeks.” On September 4, the first raid opens and the first pvp season also starts.
