BlackBerry will deploy its QNX software for medical devices and medical systems in India. The smartphone maker is working with a company that specializes in medical software. The software is now being tested.

The QNX software is being put on medical devices in collaboration with NantHealth company, a BlackBerry India spokesperson confirmed to The Economic Times. One of the applications is to be able to keep doctors and nurses in contact with each other via the equipment. In addition, the QNX software must be integrated with patient information systems.

The use of BlackBerry’s QNX software in India is currently being tested. NantHealth has already developed an operating system intended for use in the medical field and is used in approximately 250 hospitals. With the collaboration, BlackBerry probably hopes to broaden the use of its QNX software, which it took over from the maker of the same name in 2010. It is unclear whether BlackBerry also has plans to supply software for medical applications elsewhere in the world. Incidentally, QNX has had software systems in its portfolio that are intended for medical use for some time.

BlackBerry itself uses QNX for its BlackBerry 10 operating system, as yet the most recent version of the OS. In addition, QNX has been used for software in cars for some time.
