BlackBerry has sent its Android 6.0 firmware to the first testers. In the coming weeks, the Canadian smartphone maker wants to test the update, after which it should be released this spring for all users of the Priv smartphone.

The Priv currently runs on Android Lollipop, but BlackBerry had previously promised the update to Marshmallow. Through BlackBerry Beta Zone, users of the Priv have registered to test the firmware and that will happen from Wednesday, writes 9to5Google based on a non-public topic on BlackBerry’s forum.

When the update will be released for all users is still unknown. The testers should have the first build by the end of this week, but it will partly depend on the issues the testers experience when the final version comes out.

The Priv is BlackBerry’s first Android smartphone and came out last fall. The manufacturer has said this year with two cheaper models with Android. New smartphones with the BlackBerry 10 operating system are not planned for this year. The last devices with that operating system were the Classic and the Passport.
