‘BlackBerry rejected several companies for a potential acquisition’
Once again, rumors are circulating that several companies are, or have had, an interest in an acquisition of BlackBerry. The Canadian smartphone maker is said to have rejected several companies in recent months. Samsung would have put 6.4 billion euros on the table.
According to sources from the Canadian newspaper The Globe And Mail, several companies have expressed an interest in BlackBerry in recent months. However, it does not come to an acquisition, according to the sources: all potential buyers have been rejected because BlackBerry would not want to sell itself. BlackBerry top executives are of the opinion that the unnamed interested companies have offered too low amounts for an acquisition. According to The Globe And Mail, it concerns a ‘handful’ of companies. Instead of an acquisition, BlackBerry is focusing on developing a long-term strategy.
Shortly before the coverage of The Globe And Mail, Reuters already stated that Samsung would be interested in an acquisition of BlackBerry. The Korean company would have an amount of 6.4 billion euros for this. Especially the patent portfolio of BlackBerry would be interesting for Samsung. However, both companies denied that talks are or have taken place.
The recent rumors are the umpteenth time that there are reports about a possible takeover of BlackBerry. Several companies are said to have been interested in the past, although BlackBerry has never released anything publicly. Due to years of declining sales and disappointing financial results, an acquisition would have been seriously considered in the past. In the end, BlackBerry would have decided to stand on its own two feet, according to the rumours.
