BlackBerry loses less than expected

The Canadian BlackBerry has presented a loss at the presentation of the quarterly figures, which was smaller than analysts’ expectations. The company has not released any phone sales figures this time around.

BlackBerry presented the figures for the past quarter on Friday. From this it can be concluded that the net loss amounts to 47 million dollars. This had a positive effect on the company’s stock as the expected loss was higher, according to The Wall Street Journal. According to CEO John Chen, the results are due to the ‘mix of software and services’, which BlackBerry emphasizes. He therefore expects the software branch of the company to grow in the coming year. Total revenue was $286 million compared to $464 million a year ago.

BlackBerry announced in September that it would stop making its own smartphones. In the meantime, several licensees have released devices under the BlackBerry name, including the Indonesian BB Merah Putih and the Chinese TCL. These feature the Canadian company’s own Android version. BlackBerry’s strategy is therefore to let go of its own hardware and to focus further on developing software and offering services.

Earlier it appeared that BlackBerry is in talks with car manufacturers about making software for self-driving cars. It was announced this week that Ford is hiring 400 BlackBerry employees to work on wireless technologies for cars.
