BlackBerry is working with Boeing on a phone that can self-destruct
BlackBerry has announced that it is working with Boeing on a smartphone that has the ability to self-destruct. The self-destruct mechanism can be triggered, among other things, if someone attempts to break into the device.
John Chen, who leads BlackBerry as CEO, announced during a conference call in response to the recently published quarterly figures that he was working with Boeing on a smartphone. This is reported by Reuters news agency, among others. Most notably, this device gains the ability to self-destruct. This should ensure that no data can be stolen from the smartphone: as soon as the system detects that the security has been tampered with, the self-destruct mechanism can be activated.
During the announcement, BlackBerry gave few details about the smartphone and the collaboration with Boeing. As a result, much is still unknown about how the self-destruct mechanism will function. It is clear that two SIM card slots will be built in and several biometric sensors will be built in to increase security. It is unclear when the device will be released and at what price.
The quarterly figures showed that BlackBerry has sold fewer smartphones again. The number fell to 1.9 million units, compared to 4.3 million units a year ago. A loss of approximately 120 million euros was incurred.
