BlackBerry is working on smart glasses

Smartphone maker BlackBerry is working on smart glasses and a smartwatch. So says a CEO of the company. It is still unknown whether the products will be released; the manufacturer has not yet determined that.

BlackBerry is doing ‘research’ into the wearables, the head of BBM says in an interview with Computerworld. He doesn’t say where the wearables should differentiate themselves from the competition or when the watch or glasses could come out; So it seems that BlackBerry is not yet close to a release of the wearable electronics.

The watch and glasses could be accessories for BlackBerry 10 phones. Few smartwatches are compatible with those devices. BlackBerry is about to release new smartphones: the Bold successor Classic and the Passport. The manufacturer wants to announce details about the release of those devices later this month at its own event.

Despite the fact that BlackBerry is still known as a manufacturer of hardware, that is not the most important source of income: the devices still account for around 30 percent of the turnover. The rest comes from software and services.
