BlackBerry: BB10 support will continue for another two years
BlackBerry has announced that it will continue to support BB10 for “at least two years” and that devices running BlackBerry OS will continue to access its network for the same amount of time. The company also says it is closing its app store.
That will happen on the last day of 2019, the company said in an announcement. Before that, it will close other services, Travel and Playbook, in February and March of next year, respectively. The company made its last device with BlackBerry OS and BB10 in 2015. The company no longer makes its own phones, but other manufacturers such as TCL do so with a license. These are also devices that run on Android. BlackBerry does not make clear in its announcement what exactly it means by ‘support’, the last release of BB10 came out about a year ago.
In addition, the company shared information about its Priv device, which was released more than two years ago. It was previously known that it would no longer receive an update to Android Nougat. BlackBerry writes that it has been releasing monthly updates for the device for longer than the promised two years and that it is now stopping. It does promise that if a critical vulnerability is identified, it will work with its partners to ensure the necessary patches are released.
The company announced in October that it saw good results in software and license sales. Phone revenues plummeted.
