BlackBerry allowed to continue services in Pakistan

The Pakistani government has decided that BlackBerry does not have to discontinue its BES services in the country. The manufacturer therefore remains active in Pakistan. BlackBerry maintains that the Pakistani government will not be allowed access to the BES servers.

BlackBerry says it looks forward to staying active in the Pakistani market for years to come and introducing new products and services in the country. “We are grateful that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and the Pakistani government have accepted our position that we cannot deliver content from BES traffic from our customers, nor can we provide access to BES servers,” the company said in a statement.

This ends a months-long dispute between the Canadian company and the Pakistani government. Pakistan wanted full access to traffic flowing through the Blackberry Enterprise Service, including emails and BBM messages. BlackBerry refused, after which the Pakistani government gave the company until the end of November to stop using BES. That deadline was extended to the end of December and the order to stop is now off the table.
