The BitTorrent Foundation is going to issue BitTorrent tokens, BTT. The goal is for users to use it to get faster downloads. The tokens will be integrated into µTorrent Classic first.

In conjunction with the tokens, BitTorrent introduces the BitTorrent Speed feature. This is an extension of the BitTorrent protocol, which aims to keep swarms alive longer by providing a reward for seeding. According to the BitTorrent Foundation, there are now few incentives to continue seeding once a download is complete.

BitTorrent Speed allows users to offer files in exchange for BitTorrent tokens, offering priority access to seeds and higher bandwidth. The intention is to create an economy based around the decentralized infrastructure, on which users will eventually be able to offer decentralized apps and services.

First, the tokens and the Speed function will come to the Windows client µTorrent Classic, but in time the components will also have to come to other clients and eventually the token system should also be deployable outside the BitTorrent ecosystem. Users can opt-out and the BitTorrent Foundation claims that the original BitTorrent system remains intact.

The tokens are based on Trons TRC-10 and will be available via Launchpad of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. BitTorrent was acquired in the summer of last year by the creator of the cryptocurrency Tron. Since then, the company has been working on the integration of Tron tokens under the name Project Atlas. The company has outlined its plans in a white paper.
